Global Kids Extended-day Program at The International School, centrally located in South Waterfront in SW Portland, is hiring for a number of positions for our new in-house Extended-day Program! Hours are generally in the afternoons on regular school days. Additional hours are available on no-school days and school breaks, including summer breaks.

Job Description

Title: Group Leaders- Early Childhood; School Age; and Assistant Group Leader-Early Childhood 

Department: Global Kids Extended-day Program

Reports to: Global Kids Program Manager

Status: Non-exempt (hourly)

Wage: $13.50+

Schedule:

  • Inquiry Week (mandatory training): August 17- August 24, 2018
  • Regular Program Schedule: August 28- June 12. See Global Kids Program Calendar for details. Typical hours for a Group Leader are within the hours of 2:30pm- 6:00pm Monday-Friday, starting at 1:30pm on Tuesdays for staff meetings. Actual schedule will be determined by the Global Kids Program Manager.
  • Alternative Schedule: Program is open on school and summer breaks, early dismissal days, and no-school days that are not holidays, pending minimum enrollments are met. See Global Kids Program Calendar for details. On Alternative Schedule days, typical hours will be approximately 5-6 hours per day. These include individual days during the school year and full weeks during school and summer breaks. Actual hours will be determined by the Global Kids Program Manager.

 

General Summary

A part-time position reporting to the Global Kids Program Manager, Group Leaders lead or assist a group of up to 15 school age students or 10 Early Childhood students, or more with additional teachers present, during the Global Kids Extended-day Program at The International School. Group Leaders welcome students upon arrival to the program and lead their assigned group throughout the program activities including snack, Enrichment classes, outdoor free play, daily Open Inquiry Time, and dismissal.  Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to taking attendance, planning and implementing curriculum, as related to PYP themes; managing classroom behavior using Culturally Responsive Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies and Restorative Justice Practices, and creating a safe, welcoming, child-friendly environment; ensuring that children are supervised 100% of the time they are at Global Kids Program; communicating with parents, Program Coordinator and Manager, and other Global Kids and school staff.

 

Essential Functions

Teaching Curriculum & Classroom Environment

  • Plan and lead Global Kids activities in accordance with the curriculum guidelines set by The International School Global Kids Program
  • Provide a fun, engaging and educational environment that supports fluency in one of the three target languages taught at TIS, when possible
  • Assume responsibility for knowing the location of all students under their charge during the periods in which they are assigned to provide supervision and/or instruction
  • Provide a safe environment for all students under their charge and notify the Program Coordinator, Program Manager, or Summer Camp Director when unsafe conditions exist
  • Work with students to prepare a presentation or exhibit for each end-of-term student showcase

 

Communication with Staff & Families

  • Responsible for reading or responding to emails within 48 hours
  • Responsible for checking email account, ensuring that the computer is not used when students are in the classroom unless it is used for instructional purposes
  • Follow substitute procedures as outlined by Global Kids Program Manager
  • Oversee the work of any Assistant Leader or Volunteer assigned to their group
  • Communicate with Assistants, Volunteers, and other staff in regards to student needs and other relevant information (e.g. notification of allergies or other medical needs, behavior supports, etc)
  • Communicate with Global Kids Coordinator, Manager, and participants’ families at the beginning (when applicable) and end of the Global Kids day in regards to program activities and student progress and/or behavior
  • Write a weekly “group update” and submit it to the Global Kids Manager weekly

 

Safety & Supervision

  • Attend daily staff circle
  • Take and monitor attendance continuously throughout program, using master daily sign-in sheets and online attendance management system
  • Notify the Program Coordinator and Manager immediately if a student is unaccounted for
  • Transport students in a safe and orderly fashion
  • Actively supervise students during outdoor free play and special campus activities (field trips, showcases, etc) according to safety policies and the Universal Expectations Matrix
  • Address any behavior or other issues that arise immediately using the supports and training provided
  • Report all extreme or repeated behavior incidents to the Program Coordinator and/or Manager utilizing a School Culture Form provided
  • Report all medical, injury, and other incidents to Program Coordinator and/or Program Manager immediately and complete an Injury/accident Report Form in conjunction with the Global Kids Program Manager or Program Coordinator by the end of the same shift if the supervisor determines it is needed
  • Chaperone and monitor students during off-campus trips to ensure their safety and good behavior.  
  • Understand, follow, and implement the rules and regulations of the Oregon Office of Child Care pertaining to the level of students under the Teacher’s charge
  • Provide care and instruction in compliance with the rules and regulations of the Oregon Office of Child Care

 

Paperwork & Schedule

  • Follow the Global Kids schedule provided, report any scheduling problems to the Program Manager in a timely fashion
  • Submit detailed lesson plans and supply requests by the stated deadlines
  • Be knowledgeable about your class’s daily schedule; keep students apprised of schedule

 

Other

  • Report for work on a schedule outlined by Program Manager – report any lateness or absences directly to Global Kids Program Manager with as much notice as possible
  • Become familiar with the rules and regulations of The International School’s Global Kids Program as outlined in the Global Kids Handbook and work in compliance with those rules and regulations
  • Conduct oneself at all times in an appropriate and professional manner
  • Attend all required trainings and meetings
  • Report to the Global Kids Program Manager, Global Kids Program Coordinator, and Summer Camp Director
  • Carry out occasional additional duties as assigned by the Global Kids Program Manager and Global Kids Program Coordinator

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:  

  • Capable of quickly traveling to multiple locations on school campus during all weather including up and down hills, lifting or otherwise carrying 40 pounds, traveling up/down flights of stairs, standing and sitting for long durations, typing for continuous hours on a computer keyboard, and reading
  • Able to stand physical demands of working with young children – sitting on the floor, bending over, etc.

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • Teacher Qualified per the Oregon Office of Child Care
  • At least one year of teaching experience with children in grades PreK to 5th
  • Proficient in written and spoken English

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of teaching experience in a school-based program
  • Bilingual: Communicate fluently in written and spoken English and any of the languages taught at the school: Spanish, Japanese or Chinese
  • Comfortable in an international community with experience living and/or traveling overseas and speaking a language other than English

 

Requirement to start work:

  • Enrollment in the Oregon Office of Child Care’s Central Background Registry (must be completed upon job offer)

These requiements may be met during training week:

  • Current Food Handler’s Card (online)
  • Current certification in CPR/First Aid (Training offered by Global Kids on August 17, 2018)
  • Completion of the Introduction to Child Care Health and Safety (ICCHS) course offered through the Oregon Office of Child Care (online course)
  • Completion of Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (RRCAN) or similar course within the state of Oregon (online course)

These requirements may be met throughout employment period with Global Kids Program:

  • 15 Hours of training per year, 8 of which must be in child development
